Going the Distance Together

2025 has been another important year for The Giant Walk – a year of growth, innovation, and community.

What began as a simple endurance walking challenge has steadily developed into something much bigger: a series of accessible marathon-distance walks that bring people together through shared challenge, conversation, and connection.

Across the year, we have seen first-time walkers take on distances they never thought possible, experienced walkers returning for new routes, and communities forming around the simple act of walking together.

The Hale to Hale Giant Walk

In May, our flagship Hale to Hale Giant Walk once again linked Hale on Merseyside with Hale in Cheshire over the course of a full marathon distance route.

More than seventy walkers joined us for a day of endurance, sunshine, and shared stories. With temperatures climbing to 28 degrees, the conditions were challenging, but the atmosphere along the route remained positive and supportive throughout.

At the finish line, walkers were welcomed with wood-fired pizza from Jonny Hewitt, massages from The Massage Company, and a wonderful performance from Vox Pop Choir, helping everyone celebrate their achievement after a long day on their feet.

Behind every step is a team that makes the event possible – route planners, safety marshals, first aiders, volunteers, and sponsors – all working quietly in the background to ensure walkers can focus on the challenge itself.

A Giant Step for Accessibility

September brought a very different type of event. The weather delivered heavy rain and difficult conditions, yet it became one of the most inspiring walks of the year.

We hosted a fundraising marathon that included a large group from the Deaf community, with around half of the ninety walkers communicating through British Sign Language.

To support this, the route incorporated interpreters, visual communication systems, and a “shielding” approach to assist with cyclist safety on shared paths.

Rosie Oram designed bespoke BSL first aid signage and brought humour – along with a generous supply of Swizzels sweets – that helped keep spirits high despite the weather.

Every finisher received a bamboo Giant Walk medal after crossing the line, a small but meaningful recognition of a significant achievement.

We are also grateful to Cheshire Police, who supported the event and worked with us on safe route management.

Corporate and Community Walks

Alongside the main events, The Giant Walk has increasingly delivered bespoke walking challenges for organisations and community groups.

These walks offer something different from traditional fundraising or team-building activities. Spending several hours walking together naturally creates space for conversation, reflection, and connection.

One such event in London this year saw participants raise over £40,000 for charitable causes, demonstrating how endurance challenges can bring people together around a shared purpose.

As interest grows, we are continuing to develop these tailored walks for organisations, charities, and communities looking for a meaningful and memorable experience.

Building the Next Generation

The Giant Walk now benefits from a growing team of young instructors – Louis, Michael, Tommy, and Arieh – all in their twenties.

Their professionalism and energy ensure each event runs smoothly and safely. Much of the work behind the scenes involves logistics, safety planning, and coordination that walkers rarely see, which is exactly how it should be.

Their involvement also reflects the future of the project, with a new generation helping lead inclusive outdoor challenges.

Comfort Zones and Courage

Every walker brings a different story.

For some it is their first endurance challenge. Others return year after year. Some walk to support a charity, while others simply want to see if they can complete the distance.

Watching people step outside their comfort zone remains one of the most powerful aspects of these events.

As we often say during the walks:

When you go outside your comfort zone, the expansion of learning expands your comfort zone.

That spirit – challenge, camaraderie, and humour – defines The Giant Walk.

Looking Ahead

Planning is already underway for the next chapter.

The flagship Giant Walk returns on Sunday 10 May 2026, once again connecting Hale on Merseyside with Hale in Cheshire over a marathon distance route.

Alongside this, further community, corporate, and partnership walks are planned in Manchester and London, as well as new opportunities to involve schools and community groups.

The aim remains simple: to create inclusive endurance walking events that encourage people to challenge themselves and support one another along the way.

To everyone who has walked, volunteered, donated, or supported the project – thank you.

Your encouragement and participation make every step possible.

Here’s to the next Giant Walk.
