About Giant Walk

What is the Giant Walk?

Giant Walk is organised by Giant Walk CIC (Company No. 17553006), an independent, not-for-profit Community Interest Company bringing people together through walking, outdoor challenges and fundraising.

Originally developed through the outdoor educational activities of Regenesis Events CIC, Giant Walk has grown into an independent organisation offering supported endurance walks, community events, charity fundraising challenges and corporate experiences.

Our name comes not only from the scale of our walking challenges but also from the Giant Childe of Hale statue, where our original Hale to Hale route begins.

Our walk leaders include experienced outdoor instructors and individuals with Search and Rescue training. Our philosophy is inclusive and encouraging. We believe in the power of the outdoors to build confidence, improve wellbeing and help people achieve something they might not have thought possible.

Whether you’re walking individually, with friends or as part of a corporate team, Giant Walk is about shared experiences, personal achievement and making a positive difference.

What types of walks and events do you organise?

Giant Walk organises a growing programme of supported walking experiences for individuals, charities, community groups and businesses.

Our events include the original Hale to Hale walking marathon, city-based challenges such as the Giant Winter Walk, corporate team challenges, charity fundraising events and bespoke private walks.

Distances and formats vary, from shorter community walks to full 42km marathons and longer endurance challenges.

Each event has its own character, but all share our commitment to bringing people together, encouraging outdoor activity and making a positive difference.

Who can take part?

Everyone is welcome at Giant Walk! Our events bring together individuals, friends, families, community groups, charities and corporate teams, all sharing the experience of getting outdoors and achieving something worthwhile.

You don’t need to be an experienced walker to get involved. Whether you’re taking on your first organised walking challenge, looking for a new personal goal or joining colleagues for a fundraising event, there’s something for different abilities and ambitions.

Some of our walks are designed for beginners, while others offer more demanding endurance challenges, including full walking marathons. We encourage participants to choose a distance that suits their fitness and experience, and to prepare appropriately.

Age requirements, accessibility and participation arrangements vary between events, so please check the individual event details before booking. Our aim is to make walking as inclusive, enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

Do I need to be an experienced walker?

Not at all! Many Giant Walk participants are taking on their first organised walking challenge, and helping people achieve something they never thought possible is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Walking is one of the most accessible forms of physical activity, but longer distances do require preparation. A 21km half marathon or 42km full marathon is a significant achievement, even on relatively flat terrain.

We encourage everyone to build up their walking distances gradually, wear comfortable footwear and prepare for the conditions. Our training tips and resources can help you get ready, whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced walker looking for your next challenge.

Our supported events are designed to provide encouragement and practical assistance along the way, although the level of support varies between events.

The most important thing is to choose a challenge that’s right for you. Giant Walk isn’t about being the fastest. It’s about taking part, enjoying the experience and discovering what you can achieve.

Events & Participation

What distances can I walk?

Giant Walk offers a variety of walking distances to suit different abilities, ambitions and occasions.

Our events include shorter community walks, half-marathon challenges of approximately 21km, full walking marathons of 42km and longer endurance experiences.

Our original Hale to Hale challenge offers a picturesque, relatively flat route, while events such as the Giant Winter Walk bring walking into the heart of the city. We also organise corporate challenges and bespoke walks, where distances and routes can be tailored to the group.

Not every distance is available at every event, so please check the individual event page for the options, routes and timings before booking.

Whatever distance you choose, the emphasis is on participation, personal achievement and enjoying the experience.

How do I book a place?

Booking a Giant Walk event is easy. Simply visit our homepage, browse our upcoming walks and challenges, and select the event you’d like to join.

Each event provides information about the available distances, ticket prices, dates and what’s included. Depending on the event, you may be able to book individually, with friends or family, or as part of a team.

Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a confirmation email and further information to help you prepare. We will also ask you to complete a participant or medical information form before the event.

If you’re interested in organising a private walk or entering a larger corporate or charity team, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

We recommend booking early, as places may be limited for some events.

Can I walk with friends, family or colleagues?

Absolutely! Giant Walk is all about bringing people together, and sharing the experience with others can make the challenge even more rewarding.

You can take part individually, walk with friends or family, or bring together a team from your workplace, school, charity or community group. Whether you’re walking for a shared cause, celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a day outdoors, everyone is welcome.

Our events are particularly popular with corporate teams looking for an alternative team-building experience that combines physical activity, personal achievement and community fundraising. Walking together creates opportunities to connect, encourage one another and achieve something memorable outside the usual working environment.

You don’t all need to have the same level of fitness or experience. Some events offer different distances, allowing participants to choose a challenge that suits them while still sharing the occasion.

For larger groups, corporate teams or organisations interested in a bespoke walking experience, please get in touch to discuss the options.

What support is provided during an event?

One of the things that makes Giant Walk different is the support we provide to help participants enjoy their challenge safely and confidently.

Our events are organised by experienced outdoor leaders, including instructors with Mountain Training qualifications and individuals with Search and Rescue experience. We place particular emphasis on preparation, participant welfare and making our walks welcoming to people with different levels of experience.

Depending on the event, support may include:

  • Experienced walk leaders and volunteer marshals
  • First aid and welfare support
  • Clearly planned routes and navigation guidance
  • Checkpoints and rest stops
  • Support vehicles or shuttle transport
  • Encouragement and practical assistance throughout the challenge

For our longer supported walks, we aim to provide reassurance that help is available if you become tired, need assistance or are unable to complete your chosen distance.

The precise arrangements vary between events and will be explained in the relevant event information.

Our aim is simple: you provide the determination, and we’ll provide the organisation, encouragement and support to help you achieve your goal.

What if I struggle on the day?

Don’t worry! Many of our participants are taking on distances they’ve never walked before, and helping people overcome those challenges is one of the things we do best.

Giant Walk is designed to be supportive rather than competitive. Our experienced walk leaders, volunteer marshals and fellow walkers are there to offer encouragement, practical advice and reassurance when the going gets tough.

If you’re feeling tired, developing blisters or finding the distance harder than expected, there are usually ways to help you keep going. A short rest, a change of pace, some refreshments or simply walking alongside someone who can offer encouragement can make all the difference.

On many of our longer events, we also provide checkpoints, welfare support and support vehicles, so help is available if you need it. The exact arrangements depend on the event.

Most participants who experience a difficult patch find they can recover and go on to complete their challenge. There’s often more left in the tank than you think, particularly with the right support around you.

Of course, safety always comes first. If continuing isn’t sensible, our team will help you make the right decision and arrange assistance where available.

Our philosophy is simple: we’re here to help you succeed, not to see how quickly you can finish. The sense of achievement when you cross that finish line is what Giant Walk is all about.

Can children or dogs take part?

Giant Walk is all about bringing people together, and many of our events are designed to welcome families and well-behaved dogs.

Walking together is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, build confidence and share a sense of achievement. Some of our events offer shorter distances suitable for younger walkers and families, while others are designed for more experienced participants.

For safety and welfare reasons, children and dogs are not permitted on our full 42km walking marathons.

Children are welcome on selected shorter walks when accompanied by a responsible adult. Dogs may also join designated dog-friendly events, provided they are kept under appropriate control and their owners take responsibility for their welfare and behaviour.

Participation rules vary between events, so please check the individual event information before booking.

We want everyone to enjoy their Giant Walk experience, whether on two legs or four, and choosing the right distance and event is an important part of that.

Charities & Fundraising

Do I have to raise money for charity?

Not necessarily! While charitable fundraising is at the heart of many Giant Walk events, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to take part, whatever their reason for walking.

You might be raising money for a cause close to your heart, joining a corporate team, supporting a community initiative or simply setting yourself a personal challenge.

Some of our events are organised in partnership with specific charities, while others give participants the freedom to support a UK-registered charity of their choice. Fundraising requirements vary between events, and we’ll always make these clear when you book.

We encourage fundraising wherever possible because even relatively small donations can make a meaningful difference when lots of people come together.

Above all, Giant Walk is about participation, community and shared achievement. Whether you’re walking to raise money, raise awareness or improve your own wellbeing, you’re helping to make the event a success.

Can I choose my own charity?

That depends on the event, but wherever possible, we want you to support the causes that matter most to you.

For our open Giant Walk events, participants are welcome to raise funds for any UK-registered charity of their choice. Whether it’s a national organisation, a small local charity or a cause that has personally touched your life, the choice is yours.

For events organised in partnership with a specific charity, we ask that participants direct their fundraising towards that charity. These events are designed to support a particular cause, and the funds raised help make a meaningful difference to the organisation involved.

Some of our community events also bring several charities together, giving participants the opportunity to support one of the participating organisations.

The fundraising arrangements will always be explained in the individual event information, so you’ll know exactly who you’re walking for before you sign up.

Our aim is to make fundraising accessible, inclusive and rewarding, helping charities of all sizes benefit from the collective efforts of the Giant Walk community.

How do donations and fundraising work?

Giant Walk makes it easy to turn your walking challenge into an opportunity to make a difference.

Once you’ve chosen your event and the charity you’re supporting, you can set up a fundraising page through a platform such as JustGiving or use your charity’s preferred fundraising method. You can then share your challenge with friends, family and colleagues, inviting them to sponsor your efforts.

Money raised through your personal fundraising page goes directly to your chosen charity, subject to the fundraising platform’s arrangements. Giant Walk does not take a percentage of these donations.

Your event ticket fee is separate from your charitable fundraising and helps cover the costs of organising and supporting the walk, including planning, staffing, safety arrangements and event facilities.

Some events may also offer the opportunity to make an additional donation when booking. Where this is available, we’ll explain which organisation will receive the donation.

You don’t need to raise a fortune to make a difference. We believe in the collective power of lots of people doing something positive, where even modest individual contributions can add up to a significant impact.

That’s what Giant Walk is all about: bringing people together, sharing an experience and helping good causes benefit along the way.

How can my charity become a Giant Walk partner?

We love working with charities of all sizes, from small local organisations to established national charities, helping them engage supporters, raise awareness and generate valuable fundraising income.

There are several ways your charity can get involved. You can encourage your supporters to take part in one of our open Giant Walk events, join a multi-charity community challenge or work with us to organise a dedicated walking event for your own cause.

We can help with event planning, route development, experienced walk leaders, safety arrangements and participant support, allowing your charity to concentrate on engaging supporters and fundraising.

Our approach is collaborative. We believe charities can achieve more by working together, sharing resources and creating opportunities that might be difficult or expensive to organise independently.

Whether you’re looking to engage existing supporters, attract new fundraisers, involve corporate partners or create an annual fundraising event, we’d be pleased to explore the possibilities.

Corporate & Private Walks

Can my business enter a team?

Absolutely! Giant Walk offers businesses two ways to get involved: entering a team into one of our organised events or arranging a private walking challenge exclusively for their organisation.

Our walks combine teamwork, physical activity, leadership development and charitable fundraising. They’re an opportunity to bring colleagues together outside the workplace, strengthen relationships and achieve something worthwhile as a team.

For businesses looking for a more personalised experience, we can organise a private walk with agreed routes, distances, timings and support arrangements. We offer different packages, from a fully supported walking challenge to experiences incorporating catering, team development and structured leadership learning.

There’s a role for everyone, whether walking, planning, navigating, communicating or supporting colleagues along the way.

Whether you’re a small business or a large organisation, we can help create an experience that supports your employee wellbeing, team-building and community engagement objectives.

Interested in getting your team involved? Email info@giantwalk.org to discuss public events or private walking experiences.

What is the Giant Walk Corporate Challenge?

The Giant Walk Corporate Challenge brings businesses together through walking, teamwork and charitable fundraising, creating a shared experience that delivers benefits beyond the workplace.

Companies can participate through our organised corporate events or arrange a private Giant Walk exclusively for their employees, clients or business partners.

Our private walks can be tailored to your organisation, with a choice of routes, distances and additional experiences. Depending on your requirements, these can include catered finish celebrations, branded merchandise, transport and structured leadership development activities.

The Corporate Challenge also provides a way to recognise collective achievement through walking distances, charitable fundraising and employer-matched donations. Our 2027 challenge includes a points system rewarding participation and fundraising, with opportunities for businesses to compare their achievements across participating sectors and regions.

It’s an opportunity to combine employee wellbeing, leadership, collaboration and measurable community impact in one memorable experience.

To discuss entering the Corporate Challenge or arranging a private corporate walk, email info@giantwalk.org.

Can you organise a private walk for our organisation?

Yes! Private walks are an important part of what Giant Walk offers, providing businesses, charities and other organisations with their own professionally organised walking experience.

We can create a dedicated event for your team, supporters, employees or corporate partners, tailored to your objectives, group size and preferred location.

Our private walking packages can include route planning, risk assessments, experienced event leaders, first aid and welfare arrangements, finisher medals and logistical support. Additional options include coach transport, catering, branded merchandise, photography and finish-line celebrations.

For corporate groups, we can also incorporate structured leadership development, with practical roles covering navigation, communication, decision-making, safety and teamwork. Where accredited CPD is required, the specific training and certification arrangements can be agreed as part of your proposal.

For charities, a private Giant Walk offers an opportunity to bring supporters and corporate partners together for a dedicated fundraising challenge without having to organise the event themselves.

We offer different packages to suit your requirements and budget, with routes, distances and additional services agreed in advance.

Practical Information

What should I wear and bring?

You don’t need expensive equipment to take part in Giant Walk, but a little preparation can make a big difference to your comfort and enjoyment.

We recommend comfortable walking shoes or boots that you’ve worn before, suitable socks and clothing appropriate for the weather. Layers are useful, particularly on longer walks when conditions can change throughout the day.

For longer challenges, a small backpack with water, snacks, waterproof clothing, any personal medication and a fully charged mobile phone is a good idea.

There’s no need to carry everything you might need for an expedition! Many of our supported events provide a support bus, checkpoints, refreshments or welfare facilities along the route, although arrangements vary between walks.

We’ll provide event-specific guidance before your challenge, including any recommended or essential equipment.

Above all, choose comfortable footwear, prepare for the distance and remember that a little training beforehand will make your Giant Walk experience much more enjoyable.

How do I find out about transport, facilities and routes?

Every Giant Walk is different, so routes, transport arrangements and facilities will depend on the event you’re joining.

You’ll find an overview of each upcoming walk on our homepage, including the location, available distances and booking information.

Before your event, we’ll provide further details to help you prepare, including starting points, arrival times, route information, parking or public transport options and any facilities available along the way.

Many of our longer supported walks include checkpoints, rest stops, toilet facilities and support transport. Where shuttle buses or coaches are available, we’ll explain how these operate and whether any additional booking or payment is required.

For private corporate and charity walks, we can arrange routes, transport and facilities around your group’s requirements, with the details agreed during the planning process.

We aim to make the practical arrangements as straightforward as possible so you can concentrate on enjoying your challenge.

If you have a particular question about an upcoming event, email info@giantwalk.org and we’ll be happy to help.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking?

We understand that plans can change, and sometimes circumstances mean you’re unable to take part in an event you’ve booked.

If you need to cancel, please email info@giantwalk.org as soon as possible, including your name, event and booking reference.

Cancellation and refund arrangements depend on the type of event and the terms agreed when you booked. Our public walking challenges and private corporate or charity events may have different conditions.

For private walks, where routes, staffing, transport, catering or other services have been arranged specifically for your organisation, cancellation charges may apply depending on how much notice is given.

If you’re unable to attend, please contact us to discuss your circumstances and any options available under your booking terms.

Full details of the applicable cancellation policy can be found in the Terms and Conditions provided when booking.

Where can I find event terms, safety information and insurance details?

Your safety and wellbeing are central to how we plan and deliver Giant Walk events.

Our walks are organised with appropriate risk assessments, experienced event leaders and safety arrangements suited to the route, distance and nature of each challenge.

Before taking part, you’ll receive relevant event information, including any participation requirements, safety guidance and instructions for the day. For some events, we may also ask you to complete a medical or participant information form so we can understand any additional support you might need.

Giant Walk CIC arranges insurance appropriate to its activities, with the specific cover and responsibilities confirmed for each event. Participants should also consider whether they require their own personal accident or travel insurance.

Our Terms and Conditions explain the contractual arrangements for bookings and participation.

For private corporate and charity walks, we can provide relevant risk assessments and details of event arrangements as part of the planning process.

If you have questions about accessibility, safety, insurance or participation requirements, please email info@giantwalk.org before booking.
