FAQs
Security Arrangements
The event has had a preliminary assessment by its organisers and the CST. It will be registered with the local Police Authority too. At the moment, it is classed as a very low risk event, and whilst contingencies are being monitored, all we can do for now is not make the location live.
Is there transport to the starting point?
This year there is no coach to the event as it is a little closer to home and has sufficient parking.
How do I make sure I walk with friends?
Firstly, you should buy tickets for the same event, or arrange to meet at the checkpoints! Then the best way to ensure you walk with your friends is to meet at the base and reform as a group. Otherwise, please let us know who you would like to walk with and we will put you together (subject to maximum group size).
How can you run three events all day from one base?
Our central point is our base for the day, with plenty of parking, public facilities and WC's.
From there each of the three events will follow a separate trail into the countryside, each returning to base for a regroup, snack/lunch and the next event will start
Where can I meet my family or friends at the end?
We will provide details of the finish point, along with any cheering points, so that family and friends can come and greet you at the end of the event. The event will start and finish at its base. The base location will be published only to walkers a week before.
How fit do I have to be?
This is an endurance walk, and you must have prepared for it. We ask that you have a good basic fitness and have undertaken some training in the run up to the event.
For the Bar/Bat Mizvah walk, some practice walks of 10-12km are recommended in the run up to the event.
A good rule of thumb for the full Marathon distance is that you should have completed at least one 20km training walk in the shoes you plan to wear on the day. It is also important that you practice changing layers of clothes on the move and train with a weighted rucksack.
What if I need the loo?
WC's along the route will be marked out in the event guide, and group mentors will know where they are.
Our coach will also have a WC on board and be available at the rest points.
Is it a race?
We discourage treating this event as a race, but you are welcome to time yourself. Groups will be formed with similarly able walkers, and you can switch groups at check points if needed. There is no chip timing- completion of the challenge and raising of funds for MyIsrael are the main priorities.
What happens if am too slow?
There are checkpoints at the rest stops along the route, where the coach will be waiting. If any walker is struggling to meet time checks, they may be asked to either leapfrog forward to the next point, or remain in the vehicle.
These checkpoints aim to ensure a maximum 10-hour completion time for the full marathon distance. Your welfare is being monitored both on the move and at rest stops.
What is your cancellation policy?
We have a no quibble cancellation policy up to 7 days before the event, and your entry fee will be returned in full minus any platform or card fees deducted. Once inside the 7 day period, no refunds are available but you can transfer onto a future event.
Boots or trainers?
Fashion or gym trainers are not suitable, but heavy walking boots are not necessarily required as all the terrain is level and on footpaths. A good running trainer or trail shoe, or lightweight walking boots are ideal. Tips will be circulated based on the weather in the days before.
How much do I have to raise?
There is no minimum fundraising target but Myisrael asks that you set-up a fundraising page through them and circulate it to your family and friends. They will be in touch with you about this.
Young people may wish to ask for donations in lieu of presents.
How will I navigate the route?
A GPX (satnav) file will be available in advance. Group mentors and leaders will have this available and are tracked, and although the route is pretty straightforward, key signposts will be on site at junctions. All mentors will have GPS and radio support from Event Control and there will be chalk markings. There is also a tracking beacon on the bus.
Can I bring my children?
Young walkers (Year 7 and above) are welcome to take part in the Bar/Bat Mitzvah challenge and the Half Marathon distance.
Children younger than this should not take part without prior agreement from the organisers.
Please can I see your T&C's, Risk Assessment or Insurance?
These are available upon request. Please email info@giantwalk.org
