It’s completely normal to feel anxious about your first marathon walk. It’s a big commitment, both physically and mentally, and stepping into the unknown can cause plenty of nerves, especially if you are still sitting on the fence about signing up.

Here is something reassuring: those nerves do not mean you are not ready. They usually mean you care.

Trust your training (or your ability to build it)
You do not need to be marathon-fit on day one. The training happens after you commit. Many first-time walkers start with the question, “Could I really do this?” and discover that, step by step, the answer becomes yes.

Focus on the process, not the distance
You do not need to picture the full distance right now. Just imagine the first few miles, the support points, the encouragement, and the steady rhythm of walking alongside others. You only ever walk the bit you are on.

Set realistic expectations
This is about experience, not speed. Walking at your own pace, taking breaks, and finishing feeling proud matters far more than the clock. First marathon walks are meant to feel achievable, not intimidating.

Control what you can
The right kit, good nutrition, regular rest points, and a fully supported route take away much of the worry. When the practical side is covered, the challenge becomes far less daunting.

Work with your nerves
A little anxiety is normal, even for experienced walkers. Take a breath, stay present, and remember you will be supported from start to finish. You are never expected to do this alone.

Remember the why
If this walk keeps popping into your thoughts, there is probably a reason. Whether it is a personal milestone, supporting a cause you care about, or simply proving something to yourself, you ‘why’ will keep you motivated.

If you are waiting for a sign that you are “ready”, this might be it. You do not need to feel ready, just willing to take the first step.
